Perdue’s Broken Promises

Governor Perdue made many promises during her campaign and first 6 months in office.  Below is an update on the status of those promises.

1. Not to raise taxes during the recession

“I don’t believe that you can raise taxes in an economy with folks struggling the way they are.” – Oct. 23, 2008.

Perdue’s budget raises taxes on working families and small businesses by $990 million.

2. Protect education funding

“And yes, even in these tough times… we will increase per-pupil spending in our public schools.” – State of the State, March 9, 2009

Perdue’s budget cuts to education will result in lays off of up to 4,500 teachers this year.

3. End wasteful spending and make government more efficient

“It is the responsibility of government to ensure every tax dollar is used as efficiently and wisely as possible.  I expect my BRAC team to root out wasteful and unnecessary spending, hold government accountable for its appropriations and help ensure taxpayers are not funding ineffective or unsuccessful programs.” – Press Release, Office of the Governor, March 13, 2009

Perdue’s budget increases state spending by $500 million dollars and includes funding for wasteful projects like a $25 million pier.
