NC Senate Minority Leader Asks For Release Of Easley Records

Now that a panel has been convened to independently investigate the destruction of travel records of former Governor Mike Easley, North Carolina Senate minority leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham County) is asking for the results of a previous investigation to be released.

Governor Bev Perdue has created a three member panel to take another look into the matter. The new panel consists of Willis Whichard, a former state Supreme Court justice and former Campbell University law school dean; Robert Morgan, a former U.S. senator, SBI director and state attorney general; and Ralph Walker, a former Superior Court and Court of Appeals judge.

The previous investigation found no fault with the NC Highway Patrol Captain who destroyed the records, but according to Raleigh News & Observer interviews with a worker in the office, the destruction of the records seemed to be dubious.

Originally, it was stated by the NC Highway Patrol that the records were destroyed to make room on a computer but the News & Observer interview with the worker revealed that there was plenty of room on the computer hard drive.

“After months of refusing Republican Leader Phil Berger’s request to appoint an outside investigator into the Flightgate Scandal…Governor Beverly Perdue finally appointed a three-member panel to conduct an independent investigation to find out why the travel records of former Governor Mike Easley were destroyed under the direction of a Highway Patrol captain,” said Senator Phil Berger’s office in a statement issued to the press last week.

“Governor Perdue still refuses to release the results of an internal investigation blaming “lawyers” and relying on an incorrect interpretation of the law as a reason for not doing so,” commented Senator Berger.

Berger said that the first thing the panel should do is release the records from the previous investigation. …
