Sony Ericsson, the beleaguered wireless handset maker, is shutting down its North American headquarters in Research Triangle Park as the company consolidates global operations. …

The 8-year-old company has 425 workers left at its RTP site, about half the number of employees that worked here in recent years. The site includes customer support, customers service, sales, finance market and research and development.

As it closes the North Carolina complex, Sony Ericsson is moving its North American headquarters to Atlanta, where currently it has 18 employees. Atlanta was selected because it’s the headquarters of Sony Ericsson’s biggest customer, AT&T. …
