Tax Reform Must Grow Jobs Not Government
Current Efforts Should Focus on Job Creation
Raleigh, N.C. – Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) expressed skepticism about the focus of current state tax reform efforts. A meeting of the Joint House and Senate Finance Committees held in Raleigh today represented the beginning of formal consideration of reforming the state tax code.
Senator Berger made the following statement:
“With unemployment over ten percent and showing no signs of decline, an unpredictable and ambitious overhaul of the state tax system in an already fragile economy is being met with skepticism from taxpayers. Public support for tax reform is critical to the success of any reform effort. To win support tax reform efforts must focus on eliminating impediments to job creation and business growth. It should not be seen as a way to funnel more money into state government coffers. Supporters of reform should refocus their goals and concentrate on protecting family budgets rather than government spending. Tax reform cannot be just another public relations strategy to justify a tax hike.â€
