8,000 More Jobless Because of Job-Killing Democratic Policies

Raleigh, N.C. – Unemployment numbers released today show that for a second consecutive month North Carolina has set a new record for unemployment increasing from 11.1 percent in January to 11.2 percent in February.  In the last month, 8,576 people working in North Carolina have lost their jobs.  In the last year, that number is nearly 90,000 according to the Employment Security Commission.  The state unemployment rate of 11.2 percent continues to far outdistance the national rate of 9.7 percent.  (“North Carolina’s Unemployment Rate Increases to 11.2 Percent in February,” Employment Security Commission of North Carolina, 3/26/10)

Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) made the following statement:

“The entire nation is suffering from this recession but North Carolina is suffering worse than most because Governor Perdue and the Democrats in control of state government continue to push job-killing tax and spending policies.  Because of Governor Perdue and the Democrats’ policies, people looking to start new businesses or relocate existing businesses to North Carolina cannot afford to do business here.  If Governor Perdue and her Democratic allies refuse to end their job-killing policies, the cycle of high unemployment is unlikely to be broken.”
