Republicans Will Fight For Citizens’ Rights To Make Health Care Decisions
Berger Reaffirms Commitment to Health Care Protection Act
Raleigh, N.C. – In January, Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) stood at a press conference with House Republican Leader Paul Stam (R-Wake) and North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Tom Fetzer to announce a Republican legislative initiative to combat the federal takeover of health care and protect an individuals’ rights to make decisions about their own health coverage. Today, Senator Berger reaffirmed Republicans’ commitment to file legislation in the upcoming short session to allow North Carolina citizens the opportunity to opt out of any mandates handed down by the federal government as a result of the health care bill and also exempt them from any penalties associated with refusing to comply with the new law.
Recent polling from Civitas and Public Policy Polling has shown that a majority of North Carolinians oppose the new health care law being signed by President Obama today.
Senator Berger made the following statement:
“We cannot stand idly by while the federal government tramples on individuals’ rights to make their own health care decisions. The people of North Carolina have stood up to make their voices heard and their calls for restraint have gone unheeded. Forcing individual citizens to buy a good or a service, as the federal legislation requires, is an unprecedented and unconstitutional overreach by the federal government and it must be opposed. Republicans in the State Senate and State House will do everything in our power to protect the interests of North Carolina citizens. Our proposed Health Care Protection Act is a common sense initiative to ensure that those who want to retain the right to make their own health care decisions are able to do so.”
