Cooper Supports Washington Mandates Limiting Health Care Choices

Raleigh, N.C. – On March 24, Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) sent a letter to Attorney General Roy Cooper urging him to join thirteen other Attorneys General across the country in filing a lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of federal mandates included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  Today, Senator Berger received a response from the Attorney General indicating his refusal to do so.

Senator Berger made the following statement:

“Roy Cooper was elected to defend the interests of North Carolina citizens and protect their rights.  Today, he decided to turn a deaf ear to a majority of North Carolinians who are asking him to stand up for them.  With this decision Attorney General Cooper has made clear that he is unwilling to stand up to Washington mandates that will raise costs, reduce quality, and limit the choices of North Carolina families as they seek access to health care coverage.  If the Attorney General is willing to allow the federal government this kind of overreach of its authority, you have to wonder if there is anything he won’t allow Washington to force on North Carolina.â€
