Incompetence and Failure of Priorities Cost Classrooms, Teachers
State budget cuts last year cost classrooms and students while demonstrating incompetence in the budget process by Democrats in control of the General Assembly. Setting the correct priorities in state spending and getting back control of the state budget by using the same zero-based budgeting process used by businesses and families is a key part of the strategy Republicans have for reforming state government. Students and classrooms should be the first thing we fund when setting the state budget, not the first thing we cut.

Under the DomeLocal school districts cut mostly teachers and assistants when they made the $225 million in budget reducations directed by legislators last year.
According to a report the state Department of Public Instruction gave legislators today, nearly 60 percent of the cut, or about $134 million, came from cutting the teacher rolls. Nearly 20 percent, or $44 million, came from cutting teacher assistants.
But enough about the current budget. On to the next one.
Legislative budget writers are talking about a shortfall of $1 billion to $1.2 billion. …
