Fay-O Editors Call Democratic Budget Plan A “Gamble”

Editors at the Fayetteville Observer say that Democratic budget writers are gambling with the state’s fiscal future by writing in a structural deficit into this year’s budget.

Senate Republicans asked the key question about this budget: What about next year, when $1 billion in federal stimulus money disappears? What’s the plan?

So far, there isn’t one. That’s where the gamble comes in. It’s clear that budget writers and legislative leaders are hoping for an accelerated recovery from the recession. We’re hoping for one too.

But hoping isn’t planning. And we’re not comfortable with this big a gamble.
