Democrats Keep People From Voting On New Debt
Block Republican Attempt to Bring Bond Proposal Before People
Raleigh, N.C. – Democrats in the State Senate voted today to prevent people from voting on borrowing an additional $451 million for capital projects to benefit the state’s university system. The proposed borrowing will leave an $18 million obligation in new debt service payments next year. Those payments will increase each year over the next five years before ultimately increasing to $39 million for FY2014-2015. In a party line vote, Democrats defeated an amendment offered by Senator Neal Hunt (R-Wake) that would have required voter approval for the new borrowing.
Â
Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) made the following statement:
Â
“Today’s vote not only means state government will spend more money we do not have but also puts North Carolina in a deeper hole with full knowledge of the fiscal crisis we are facing next year. The votes cast by Democrats today prove one thing. Senate Democrats are going to spend your money and do not care to hear from the people.â€
