Fay-O Editors Praise Berger’s Bill To Provide Transparency In State Hirings

Relief from North Carolina’s hyper-secretive personnel law could come before Independence Day, providing another opportunity for celebration.

The bill, authored by Sen. Phil Berger, a Rockingham County Republican, would break the seal that keeps information about hirings, firings, demotions and compensation secure from the prying eyes of the taxpayers who pay the salaries.

It injects sunshine by broadening the definition of “personnel” matters, providing access to a wider range of interested parties and removing some of the weasel language that limits disclosure to only the “most recent” salary adjustment or change in employment status.
