Republicans Aim for a Southeastern Sweep in the North Carolina Senate
Three of the six NC Senate seats Republicans need to flip this November in order to win the majority for the first time in 112 years could come in one corner of the state. Bill Rabon, Thom Goolsby, and Brent Jackson, three conservative businessmen seeking State Senate seats 8, 9, and 10, respectively, could tilt southeastern North Carolina — and indeed the balance of power in the General Assembly — to the GOP.
The Wilmington Star News recently ran an article about what’s at stake in southeastern North Carolina:
“The outcomes of three Southeastern North Carolina state Senate races will help determine whether Republicans or Democrats control the Senate — and the legislative and spending oversight that comes with that power.
“All three would-be incumbents in those districts — Democratic Sens. Charlie Albertson, Julia Boseman and R.C. Soles Jr. — aren’t running for re-election, giving Republicans mouth-watering hopes of taking those seats en masse.
“The two parties are watching those three races closely ahead of the Nov. 2 elections. Whoever controls the legislature also gets more say in the redistricting process, which happens once every 10 years based on U.S. Census counts.
…
“Currently, the Democrats hold 30 of the Senate’s 50 seats, including the three Southeastern North Carolina seats. That party has controlled the Senate uninterrupted for more than a century.
“The GOP needs to win six seats currently held by Democrats — and retain its existing ones — to have its first Senate majority in more than a century. Potentially, half of that ground could be made up in southeastern part of the state.”
…
The Republican Party has the perfect trio to pull off the southeastern sweep this fall: all three men are well-known, highly successful small business owners. Bill Rabon is a Southport native, veterinarian, and partner in three Brunswick County animal hospitals. Thom Goolsby is a respected Wilmington attorney, Adjunct Professor of Law at Campbell University, and local radio and TV personality, providing policy commentary and legal assistance to area residents. Brent Jackson is the founder, President, and CEO of Jackson Farming Company, a family-owned and operated agribusiness located in Sampson County.
