Republican Senators Help Citizens Opt Out of Federal Health Care Mandate
Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina Senate on Wednesday tentatively approved a bill that would allow citizens to opt out of major provisions of the new federal health care law.
The Protect Health Care Freedom measure (HB 2) says North Carolinians:
- Cannot be forced to purchase health insurance;
- Cannot be prevented from purchasing their own health care; and
- Cannot be forced to provide care
The bill also requires the attorney general to represent citizens who are fined or punished for not following the federal health care mandate to buy insurance.
“Our citizens deserve the same rights as Washington insiders and others who have been allowed to opt out of this law,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham). “A lot about this law is troubling. The Federal Government shouldn’t force North Carolinians or anyone else to buy a particular product, including health insurance.”
