Senate Republicans Act to Stop Job-Killing Regulations

Senate Republicans this week are taking action to ease burdens on North Carolina businesses and create a stronger environment for private-sector job creation.

Two bills expected to pass the Senate this week will crack down on the unnecessary government rules and regulations that unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats enforce and interpret as they see fit.

For years, these regulations have stifled job growth in North Carolina by making it tougher for businesses to grow and prosper.

More than 15,000 new regulations and changes have been implemented over the past decade.

Nearly 10 percent of North Carolinians currently are unemployed.

Gov. Beverly Perdue plans to speak out in a press conference on regulatory reform today, after two years of failing to take significant action to lift the burden on businesses.

“The job-creating private sector has been crippled by unnecessary rules and regulations for far too long,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham). “We have done in two weeks what the governor and Democratic lawmakers have been talking about for two years. These reforms will help North Carolina recruit and keep companies and jobs. For too long, these companies and jobs have been going to surrounding states with less burdensome regulations and lower taxes.”

A Senate committee today passed SB 22, which prohibits government agencies from imposing new costs on citizens and businesses until a joint committee scrutinizes which rules need to be eliminated.

SJR 17 creates that joint regulatory reform committee, which will be comprised of members of the House and Senate. The committee will travel the state to hear input from business leaders and citizens on the effectiveness of existing regulations.
