Senate Republicans Work to Ease Burden on Business

Committee would target unnecessary rules and regulations that stall job growth

The North Carolina Senate this week is considering numerous measures that would create a stronger business climate and help pave the way for increased job growth.

Senators Harry Brown (R-Onslow) and David Rouzer (R-Johnston) filed a bill, SB 22, to prohibit state agencies from crafting new rules that impose costs on businesses or citizens.

Brown, Rouzer and Senator Brent Jackson (R-Sampson) also filed a joint resolution, SJR 17, to create the Joint Regulatory Reform Committee.  The committee would scrutinize all state regulations on the private sector and target outdated rules and regulations that should be eliminated.

“North Carolina businesses have been burdened with unnecessary government red tape for far too long and need the freedom to operate efficiently in order to compete and create jobs,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger. “This committee will help remove vague and outdated rules that hurt our state’s businesses.”

The Joint Regulatory Reform Committee would be comprised of eight Senators and eight House members who would hold meetings and receive public input.  Berger would appoint the Senate members, and House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) would appoint the House members.

Three of the eight Senate members on that committee would be members of the Senate’s Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resource Committee, and three would come from the Commerce Committee.

“For North Carolina businesses to be competitive, we must eliminate duplicative, counterproductive and unnecessary regulations and programs that hinder job creation and economic opportunity,” said Senator Rouzer.
