Raleigh, NC: Rep. David Lewis (R-Harnett) and Sen. Ralph Hise (R-Mitchell), chairmen of their respective chambers’ redistricting committees, announced Wednesday they are seeking comments from the public on criteria for drawing new legislative maps at the joint committee meeting scheduled for Friday, August 4 at 10:30 a.m. The chairs reemphasized that public comment is already being accepted via the General Assembly’s website and U.S. mail.
The committees will meet again on Thursday, August 10 at 10 a.m. to adopt the criteria under which legislative maps will be drawn.
“While we had originally planned to set aside additional time to receive comments from North Carolinians and hold a statewide public hearing on criteria across the state, we have said all along that we will comply with the federal court’s order,” said Lewis and Hise. “Moving forward with this process over the next week will help us comply with the court’s deadline.”
Legislators had asked to have until mid-November to conduct the legislative redistricting process. On Monday night the court announced a compressed deadline of September 1 assuming no extensions are requested or allowed.
